Mother’s Day Naked Cake

mother's day naked cake

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers and Mother figures out there!  I am so grateful for all the amazing moms I have in my life who inspire, guide and push me to be the best and then comfort and support when things don’t turn out as I hoped, only to inspire and push me to try again.  Blessed.  I have been desperately wanting to try my had at these gorgeous Naked Cakes I’ve been seeing everywhere and what better occasion than Mother’s Day!

I must say this was not as difficult as I was expecting!  While I do need to work on slicing the cakes to create two equal halves, overall I’m thrilled with how it turned out!  And most importantly, I think my Mom is going to love it!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year! A time to get together with friends over margaritas, tacos, chips, salsa, guacamole and all things Mexican!

This year the celebration is filled with mixed emotions, my beloved hometown of Fort McMurray, Alberta has been ravaged by wild fires, forcing the 80,000 inhabitants from their homes. While I’m heart broken over the devastation and loss, the way Canadians pull together in times of tragedy has my heart bursting with pride and gratitude.  So I figure after the emotional roller coaster Albertans have been on this week, a Spicy Jalapeno Margarita is just the thing to calm the nerves and celebrate Cino de Mayo.

Mine began in a beautiful small town in Northern Alberta, called Fort McMurray.  A town that drew people from all over the world to set roots and achieve their dreams.

Much as been written about Fort McMurray over the years, knows for it’s oil riches. But what those of us who have spent any significant amount of time there know, is what an incredible sense of community and connection it fostered.  Which is why the devastation of this wild fire is especially difficult to bear.

It has been many years since I’ve lived in Fort McMurray, but it will always be home.  And today, that home is hurting.  My community is suffering.

Fort McMurray may be my home, but it is Canada’s city.  Offering so much hope,  growth and prosperity for all of us.
