You’ll often hear design is in the details. And if you’ve ever renovated you’ll know that there is no shortage of details to consider. One such detail that is often overlooked and doesn’t receive nearly the attention it deserves is lighting. But in fact, it’s lighting that highlights a design, creates the mood and often determines how a space is used.
Lighting and in particular layered lighting, is where the magic lies. Intentionally layering lighting creates depth, warmth, and versatility in a home. It’s the secret sauce that takes a room from flat and one-dimensional to rich and storied.
The foundation of lighting in most homes is what’s known as Ambient Lighting. The backdrop to all other lighting, ambient lighting lights an entire space, think ceiling fixtures, such as recessed lights, chandeliers and flush mounts.
Task Lighting offers the next layer of lighting. Focused and intentional, task lighting highlights how the space is used. Whether cooking, reading or working, thoughtful task lighting can offer a beautiful design element to a space while maintaining function. Task lighting includes, lamps, kitchen pendants, under cabinet lights and sconces.
The final layer, Accent Lighting is my favourite. Highlighting architectural elements, furniture, artwork and collectibles, bringing to life all the details in a design. This layer creates depth, giving your space character and personality. Setting function briefly aside for form and beauty.
