When he’s a little bit country and she’s … well, not – how do you create a space they both love? With a mix of rustic elements, delicious textures and a touch of sparkle. Today’s urban cowboy client reveal is probably my favourite to date. The transformation is truly remarkable and this young couple were a dream to work with.
Married for a couple of years, my clients purchased their first home with the intention of slowing updating it and making it their own. Built in 1961, there was understandably a lot of work to do. But water damage in the master bedroom quickly moved it to the top of the list of things to do. I knew the water damage restoration cost is very expensive if you don’t get it looked at as soon as possible so it needed to be our priority. I’ve had very bad experiences in the past when clients have postponed and delayed repir work to water damaged areas and it ended up costing them even more. I usually adore the character of the older homes and do my best to maintain and enhance it as much as I can. But touches from the 70s, like yellow paint, plaid wallpaper in the bathroom and green shag carpet, I’m happy to say good bye to.
Shifting the closet to the opposite end of the room allowed us to tuck the bed into what was the closet, giving us the space to add a larger closet and a much needed extra foot in the bathroom. The custom barn doors for the closet were distressed on site, adding the perfect rustic touch and are truly a sight to behold. A traditional barn door track would have required a bulk head, which would have reduced the storage space in the closet, so we opted for a simple ceiling mounted track. Form, function and esthetic 🙂
When space permits, I like to add a king size bed to the master bedroom. In this particular case doing so left little room for a dresser, so we found a bed with drawers. The beautiful veneer picks up on the existing wood tones while the clean lines give it a modern feel. Simple white nights stands with brass accents, keep the space feeling polished and clean.
To break up all the wood in the room, a the beautiful woven rug offers delicious texture and the perfect cozy touch. The capiz shell light fixture is a bit unexpected. While the shells tie in with the organic feel of the space, the brass accent provides a bit of sparkle to contrast the rustic and woody elements. It’s a bit oversized for the space, which actually works well to balance the scale of the closet doors. And offers a dramatic touch.
When it came to accessorizing the room, I was immediately drawn to moss green as an accent colour. These pillows are done in a gorgeous velvet which is the perfect luxe touch. The textured lumbar pillow, juju hat wall decor and rope table lamps offer texture and interest while maintaining the organic simplicity of the space.
While I adore the master bedroom, especially at night with the pot lights above the bed on, the bathroom is my true love.
Adding an extra foot and re-positioning the pocket door allowed us to add in a decadent soaker tub. The extra space also allowed us to transform what was once a closet like shower, so small in fact the couple didn’t use it, into a spacious glass enclosed beauty. Gorgeous glazed porcelain tiles that look like marble offer a luxurious touch to the bathroom and keep it from feeling too masculine or rustic. For the floor we went with a concrete-effect porcelain stone in a worn grey, which picks up on the relaxed, organic feel of the master bedroom.
A custom double vanity ensured my clients had plenty of room to get ready in the morning and storage for all the essentials and then some. Matt black fixtures and hardware offer a sleek, modern touch. While it’s impossible to pick my favourite element in this space, I do love the light fixtures. They are understated and perfect, offering a modern industrial touch, without feeling overbearing. The pocket door with a white silk glass inset is another favourite touch that makes the bathroom feel open and airy.
