I realize the actual line is ‘magic mirror on the wall ….’ but it didn’t have the same effect as the title for this post. So, mirror, mirror on the wall it is. Now that I’ve cleared that up, any guesses what today’s post is about? ;-) That’s right – mirrors! They are one of the most used tools in a designers toolbox. Mirrors can help create the illusion of more space, brighten a room, and add impact and interest for a fraction of the cost of art.
If you read my living room reveal, you know one of my absolute favorite pieces is a vintage mirror I found on Kijiji. I literally did a happy dance when I got my hands on it. It is unique, functional and a great conversation starter. Vintage mirrors have a special place in my heart, and local thrifts stores, Kijiji and Etsy are my favorite places to find them.
But if vintage isn’t your thing, there are plenty of beautiful, one of kind mirrors to choose from in shapes and sizes that offer more interest than a boring rectangle, circle or sunburst.
An oversized mirror leaning against a wall creates a dramatic effect. If one large mirror isn’t in the budget, grouping similar smaller mirrors together can create the same visual impact.
Another trend right now is coloured mirrors in smoke, amber and even pink. While these are a little too retro for me, they can be a great way to extend the colour palette of a room.
In case I’ve inspired you to get a little adventurous in your choice of mirrors, I’ve pulled together some of my current favorites from around the web. What’s your favorite shape of mirror? I’d love to know in the comments below.
